How Your Self Care is Different From Our Self Care
An opinion and perspective piece written to two different people.
Self Care
You see the term everywhere now, it’s a brilliant little buzzword, really. Now it is even being used to market bath bombs and “natural” supplements, anyway, this word might mean something different to fully functioning humans who just need a break from the woes of the world and humans who suffer from mental illness.
As I write these words, getting started took all of my strength, it took me two hours to get out of bed, I wanted to move so badly but my mind wouldn’t let me. This is called depression, mixed with anxiety, and something else. I suffer from misdiagnosed severe depression, but I am a functioning depressoere (made up that word clearly). I can go to work, maintain a full time job, have a relationship, and some close friendships. I can even write a blog, but I can tell you that most days I rather be in bed, I rather shut my eyes to the world and sleep…and this wasn’t brought on by he who should not be named being not my president, this has been going on since I was 15 years old.
Side note:” Yes, that’s a lot of my business out there, my haters will be pleased. I don’t write from them though, I write for the 15 year old girl who feels alone, I write for the 20 something year old woman who can’t get out of bed, I write for me. “
Self Care for You
For you folks who are reading this just to get some perspective, to try to understand me, or someone you love; yourself care is an escape to relax. There is a lot going on in the world and it is so important to take a break from it, and if you are able, more power to you. Your self care is going to a movie instead of talking about politics, taking a long bath (maybe with the new self care bath bomb..NOT… don’t buy that s***.), or just chillin out relaxing and watching Netflix. These are imperative things to hold on to..especially so you don’t end up like me and the people who fit in the below self care.
Self Care for Us.
Where all my mental illness folks at?? Holla…cause we need to. Our self care is giving more energy. Our brain tells us to constant relax and retreat, and with this new self care trend, we might start to use that as an excuse to slip heavily into our depression. There self care is different from ours. We need to get out more, our self care is exercising, coffee with friends, taking your pet for a walk, going to an event, going to a protest, taking up a hobby. I hope you know that we can make steps to get through this..this won’t always be our lives.
With all this talk about self care we need to have the discussion of how mental illness plays into it.
My self care is different from yours. Let’s chat about it. Comments are welcome!
